Dr Malte Philipp Kaeding is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. Malte has been a cinephile since his teenage days and a big fan of the Hong Kong cinema of the 1980s and 1990s. He studied Comparative Literature with the late Esther M.K. Cheung and Film Studies with Mette Hjort during an exchange year at HKU. In spring 2017 he attended a BFI Creative Film Skills Evening Class Programme on documentary film making.
Black Bauhinia combines Malte’s research subject with his love for films. Malte believes strongly in a collaborative filmmaking process and works very closely with the local crew and protagonists at all stages of the production. He hopes Black Bauhinia to be a platform and opportunity for social movement participants and interested audiences to reflect on the question of Hong Kong’s future.
